Experiment, Discover, Learn

I grew up watching Mr. Wizard. He was a scientist who performed cool experiments on TV. The result of his influence is that every kid my age wanted a chemistry set. This chemistry set was a hinged wooden box that opened like a book. One side of the set had test tubes, flasks and such and the other side had wonderful rows of small bottles with labels like Carbon Tetrachloride and Ammonium Disulfide. Yes, cool stuff!

The experiment that was the most fun was the chemical reaction. We put a small amount of the white powdery chemical into some water in a test tube then a small spoon of orange crystals. The result was a black, bubbling ooze that erupted from the test tube. Now that was cool but my brother and I figured that if a little was neat then a greater amount would be awesome! The resulting explosion not only knocked us to the floor but it implanted a chunk of orange crystal in Mom’s kitchen ceiling. Every day, for years, as I ate my breakfast, I would look up at that evidence in the ceiling and enjoy the event again.

In life, many of the things we do are done because it is the way we always have done them. There is value in using proven methods, but growth requires something more. Experimentation, discovery, and learning are processes that add new insights and richness to life.

During the past 16 years, I have enjoyed a journey of experimentation, discovery, and learning in my spiritual walk. Reading the Bible and books on spiritual growth, and participation in ReFOCUS peer groups and Hearing God retreats have challenged me to experience God anew. Retreats, fasting, solitude, journaling and coaching serve as opportunities that have opened new doors of sensitivity to God. At each turn, I have discovered new ways God wants to pour into me. How exciting!

  1. How are you getting unstuck spiritually?
  2. What spiritual discipline do you need to try out?
  3. What do you need to do this week to get moving?

If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves, and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
II Chronicles 7:14
