You Need to Love Me More

If you are like me there are many things you love.

I love coffee in the morning – the smell, the warm mug in my hands, the taste. It starts my morning out well. I also love the smell of rain. It fills the air and reminds me of my childhood when I would play outside in the rain. I love my husband and my family. Have I told you about my grandsons? I love it when Rye and Roman see me and start yelling, “Gigi, Gigi! I missed you.” Bear hugs and kisses follow. It just melts my heart. I could go on and on.

However, about fifteen years ago, I started analyzing my walk with God. I asked God what I needed to grow closer to him. I was a part of a re:FOCUS peer group. We were all charged with coming up with a transformational goal that would draw us closer to God. What I heard from God was, “You need to love me more.”

This started a journey of discovery for me. I asked God to show me how to love Him more. The Bible tells us, ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find.

Here are seven things God showed me to do

  1. Meditate on one Bible verse all day
  2. Memorize Bible verses
  3. Look up definitions of words and journal what I tell you
  4. Turn off the car radio and let’s travel together
  5. Bring me to mind throughout the day
  6. Seek my input on everything
  7. Trust me and do what I tell you

I’m still on the journey with God, but everything has changed.

This morning I was reading Proverbs 1:23, “If you had responded to my rebuke, I would have poured out my heart to you and made my thoughts known to you.” I was in tears. This is exactly what God has been doing. I am again in tears as I write this. My precious Lord has been showing me and telling me so many things. It is hard to explain the divine awe and thrill of knowing God’s heart and thoughts.

As I ponder this, most of the things God makes known to me are about those I encounter. He lets me see their heart. He nudges me to say things and do things. He shows me His heart for our city. He tells me to get different groups of folks together. He tells me to write leaders and what to write in notes.

When I think about the book of Proverbs, it is about wisdom. True wisdom is found with the Lord. When I seek him and his thoughts, then I tap into His wisdom.
